Sally Harmon Plowden and Tee Plowden

"Every summer, my family packs our blue van for a trip to the beach. Today, I am also going to visit a sea turtle nest. I have seen many animals at the beach but never a sea turtle…" So begins Turtle Tracks, the new, spring book release by PCF Press and sponsored by Progress Energy. Written by Columbia, SC middle school teacher Sally Plowden and illustrated by artist Tee Plowden, Turtle Tracks is PCF’s first learning book aimed at children aged 7-to-12 that examines the endangered loggerhead sea turtle. Both narrative and educational, Turtle Tracks follows one family’s annual visit to a Southeastern beach where a young girl learns first-hand about loggerhead turtles and their struggle for survival. Illustrated with rich watercolor paintings, the 32-page book is geared towards students who will study the turtles in science classes, on field trips or to satisfy their own budding curiosity. Members of the Sea Turtle Survival League and the S.C. Endangered Species office have reviewed the text for scientific accuracy. "(This is) A wonderfully written and illustrated book about being aware of the wildlife around us, "said Dan Evans, Sea Turtle Survival League Education Coordinator. "(A) great addition to a child's book collection!" The Raleigh, N.C.-based utility Progress Energy chose to sponsor the book because they felt it included valuable lessons about Coastal ecology. With 2.8 million customers on and near the beaches of the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida, Progress Energy felt it could help educate children about sea turtles during the height of nesting season – primarily May through August. "By increasing public awareness and community participation, we can all work to strike a better balance between environmental quality and economic vitality on the coast," said Charles R. Wakild, the Executive Director of Environment, Health & Safety for Progress Energy.
