Description:

The Gabon Sea Turtle Partnership, or Partenariat Tortues Marines du Gabon, was created in 2005 as a network of all the sea turtle projects in Gabon with the aim of identifying and addressing the major priorities for research and conservation of sea turtles nationwide. Gabon hosts the biggest nesting leatherback population in the world, as well as nesting and foraging populations of green turtles, hawksbills and olive ridleys. All are threatened by poaching of eggs and adults, intentional and accidental fishing, and habitat disturbance and degradation, such as pollution, development, erosion, lighting, debris and logs on the beaches.

The partners that make up Gabon’s Sea Turtle Partnership are Aventures Sans Frontières (ASF), Centre National des Données et de l’Information Oceanographiques (CNDIO), Gabon Environnement, Ibonga, Protection des Tortues Marines d’Afrique Centrale (PROTOMAC), the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), as well as national park authorities (ANPN), local and government stakeholders. Thus, the Partnership represents a synergy of expertise and initiatives by many groups and individuals. Some of our main objectives include: standardised monitoring and habitat surveillance, rigorous training and scientific research, centralised data-management, nationwide awareness and threat-reduction campaigns.
