Description:
Our aim is to establish a photo identification database of individual sea turtle, in order to better understand the resident, transient and nesting turtle populations in the Perhentian Islands, as well as their distribution and movement around the islands.
Our conservation efforts include assisting Department of Fisheries (DoF) in patrolling turtle nesting beach sanctuaries, collecting ecological data on nesting turtles, and relocating eggs to a protected turtle hatchery to help prevent poaching. In addition, we promote conservational awareness among the local community and visiting tourists through educative outreach initiatives, information boards, posters and presentation at resorts.
Organization Type: Non-governmental
Activities: Conservation, Education, Monitoring, Outreach, Research, Stranding, Turtle Tours
Turtle Tours: We organise Turtle Conservation Day for half a day and the activities include:
- Introduction to sea turtles
- A brief presentation about our work at Perhentian Islands
- Public can join us on our snorkel survey to collect photos (data) of foraging turtles
- Data analysis where we show the public how we identify individual sea turtles
We are based in the village of Perhentian Islands. The project is seasonal and the Turtle Conservation Day is available from April - October 2015. Please book at least 2 days before.
