SCDNR Marine Turtle Conservation Program

The SCDNR Marine Turtle Conservation Program is responsible for managing and protecting sea turtles in the state of South Carolina, USA. This program has several all encompassing components: management, monitoring, research, and education. More specifically this program provides technical expertise on anthropogenic activities that have the potential to impact sea turtles (i.e., nourishment, dredging), locates and protects sea turtle nests (~300 km of coastline), documents strandings, performs necropsies on fresh dead strandings, works with the SC Aquarium to provide rehablitation for live strandings, monitors nearshore waters for leatherbacks, and provides as much education, outreach and exchange of scientific information as time allows.

Description:

The Juara Turtle Project runs a Hatchery dealing with Green and Hawksbill Sea Turtles.

We are non government funded and purchase the eggs in competition with restaurant or other sales venues.

It is clear to us that Sea Turtle endangerment is a small aspect of the devastation human actions are having on the planet. we are in the location and moral situation to deal with these turtles here, but advocate and attempt to educate others in the psychology and actions involved in environmentalism.

opportunities with us involve programs for school groups and volunteers to help fund our hatchery activities and to teach. also businesses sponsors that can help finance us and spread a grass roots message of environmentalism. we firmly believe that everybody already knows how to be environmentally conscious and simply needs a little reminding and encouragement.
