Description:

TOMAGE represents a collaboration between the National Institute for Forestry Development and Management of the System of Protected Areas in Equatorial Guinea (INDEFOR), the Bioko Biodiversity Protection Program (BBPP; along with the University of Equatorial Guinea and Drexel University) and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). Our efforts are focused on research and conservation of the four common sea turtle species in Equatorial Guinea, green turtles, leatherbacks, olive ridleys and hawksbills. The most important project sites include the beaches of southern Bioko and the continental regions of Rio Campo and Corisco Bay, hosting significant nesting, developmental and foraging habitat. We pursue three main objectives: (1) Community-based nest monitoring in Bioko and Rio Campo; (2) Coastal surveys to assess sea turtle status and distribution; (3) Nationwide outreach addressing threats, such as intentional captures and high demand for sea turtle meat and eggs.

Organization Type: Academic, Governmental, Non-governmental
