Description:

Research group of Dr Michael White: Principal Investigator for sea turtles in the Cook Islands. ‘Honu’ consists of local researchers and Island Councils, but with links to the Ministry of Marine Resources and National Environment Service;: we have permission to work throughout the archipelago (2 million sq km); since 2009 we have visited 9 of the 15 islands in our nation. A baseline survey was completed on Rakahanga in 2012 and in-water and nesting surveys at Tongareva and Palmerston Atolls. We have strong links with four universities and their higher degree programmes. We work closely with the CI Ministry of Education and have taught in several schools: we have ongoing fieldwork with Omoka School. We contribute data to the National Biodiversity Assessment; Pacific Regional databases (e.g. TREDS & SWOT) and participate in collaborative genetic and tagging studies. Dr White recently published 3 papers for the Cook Islands, the first in decades. Our speciality is remote atoll research (coastline, nesting, biodiversity, and underwater surveys). Traditional Management of natural resources is the main approach of our work and we build capacity in locally-meaningful ways: every atoll is different!
