SCDNR Marine Turtle Conservation Program

The SCDNR Marine Turtle Conservation Program is responsible for managing and protecting sea turtles in the state of South Carolina, USA. This program has several all encompassing components: management, monitoring, research, and education. More specifically this program provides technical expertise on anthropogenic activities that have the potential to impact sea turtles (i.e., nourishment, dredging), locates and protects sea turtle nests (~300 km of coastline), documents strandings, performs necropsies on fresh dead strandings, works with the SC Aquarium to provide rehablitation for live strandings, monitors nearshore waters for leatherbacks, and provides as much education, outreach and exchange of scientific information as time allows.

Description:

Reserva Playa Tortuga is a non-profit biological research and education center formed in 2009 by community members ("citizen scientists") and Costa Rican scientists. RPT aims to contribute to the fields of biological research and science based conservation management as well as fomenting a culture of environmental conservation in the areas influenced by the National Wetlands of the Terraba-Sierpe basin.

Playa Tortuga Ojochal is located in Bahia Ballena in the district of Osa, Province of Puntarenas, Costa Rica. The beach is currently 1400 meters, limited to the north with the Ventanas Beach Rocks and south by the mouth of the Térraba River. Additionally, Terraba River is directly influenced by the Turtle River at the north end and Balsa River at the south end. The area is characterized by hot humid weather, which has an annual average temperature of 23-27 degrees Celsius, with an annual rainfall 2050-3420 mm, with well marked dry season from late December to early May.

The Lora or olive ridley sea turtle nesting period at Playa Tortuga extends from July to December, with the peak of nesting in the months of September and October. Each year the beach receives approximately 80-90 nests, which are managed in a nearby hatchery.
