Asociación Chelonia is a non-profit organization founded in 1997 dedicated to the conservation of the natural resources and threatened species and ecosystems, and to the promotion of sustainable human development. Its scientific research is based on building up knowledge and promoting the conservation of threatened species, mainly of turtles, crocodilians and sharks. Moreover the organization´s experimental research supports the balanced exploitation of natural resources, and the mitigation of the bycatch.

With regards to sea turtle conservation, the organization is working on the testing of the Turtle Excluder Devices in the shrimp trawl fisheries of the Spanish Atlantic and Mediterranean. Additionally, Chelonia researchers are evaluating and monitoring sea turtle bycatch in the Spanish Atlantic and Mediterranean longline, trawl and tuna trap fisheries, and are involved in the training and awareness-raising of both the fishing sector and civil society.

Moreover, Chelonia is supporting a local initiative consisting in the conservation, monitoring and management of sea turtles and their nesting habitat in a regional protected area of the Colombian Caribbean. The activities carried out have included ecotourism training and capacity building, management and awareness-raising.
