Description:

The Sea Turtle Rescue Centre (STRC) group of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn runs two centres for sea turtles, one located at the main institute which recovers and cures sea turtles with health problems and one that is located close to Naples in the former industrial area of Bagnoli. The latter is dedicated exclusively to the rehabilitation of the turtles cured at the SZN rescue centre, and to educational programmes such as guided tours, specialised training courses and workshops. The STRC group has become a reference for the whole Mediterranean, so that it was engaged by UNEP RAC-SPA (United Nations Environment Programme – Regional Activity Centre for Specially Protected Areas) to compose the Guidelines to improve the Involvement of Marine Rescue Centres for Marine Turtles.
Research initiated in 1996 with the first project on satellite tracking of rehabilitated turtles in the Mediterranean. Since then various biotelemetry techniques have been employed, with the aim to identify important migration corridors, define the turtle’s role in marine ecosystems, detect overwintering sites and monitor the turtle’s at-sea behaviour and habitat use. More recently, molecular investigations have been carried out to understand the spatial distribution of loggerhead turtle rookeries within the Mediterranean Sea and to depict the influence of factors such as rookeries size, geographic distance, sea surface currents and life stages on the recruitment of juveniles to the regional neritic developmental habitats.
