Description:
HPA/NOAA cooperative sea turtle research program works primarily on green turtle research and conservation on the Big Island, Hawaii. High school students assist NOAA scientists to capture and tag resident green turtles. Telemetry work with the population includes the deployment of TDRs, satellite tags, and remote video cameras on basking grounds. In addition to working in Hawaii, HPA students and scientists have participated in sea turtle research in Japan, Australia, Samoa, Singapore and Florida among others.
Educational outreach is conducted by students and faculty at HPA through participation in various community events and through the distribution of printed material and educational signs.
HPA also operates the sea turtle rescue center for the Kohala coast of the Big Island.
