Description:
The marine turtle programme in Pulau Banyak, as part of the local NGO Yayasan Pulau Banyak, has been created in response to an urgent need to identify the current status of the sea turtle populations in Northwest Sumatra. The Banyak islands provide nesting beaches for three species of critically endangered and endangered sea turtle species; Leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) and Green (Chelonia mydas) turtles. No current information exists on leatherback populations nesting in Sumatra, and green and hawksbill turtle populations are also data deficient. The Pulau Banyak sea turtle conservation programme will provide significant baseline information for combined international sea turtle conservation actions.
A beach patrol team of locals, students and national volunteers have been trained to collect the data and use standardized methodology in their recording and conservation efforts. Yayasan Pulau Banyak also provides the opportunity to university students of Syiah,Banda Aceh, to collect data for their thesis and have valuable work experience to develop their future career.
Information is being collected during nightly beach patrols and nesting sea turtles are being measured, tagged and recorded.
An environmental education programme with lesson plans concentrating on local natural recourses is underway for implementation at local schools.
