SCDNR Marine Turtle Conservation Program

The SCDNR Marine Turtle Conservation Program is responsible for managing and protecting sea turtles in the state of South Carolina, USA. This program has several all encompassing components: management, monitoring, research, and education. More specifically this program provides technical expertise on anthropogenic activities that have the potential to impact sea turtles (i.e., nourishment, dredging), locates and protects sea turtle nests (~300 km of coastline), documents strandings, performs necropsies on fresh dead strandings, works with the SC Aquarium to provide rehablitation for live strandings, monitors nearshore waters for leatherbacks, and provides as much education, outreach and exchange of scientific information as time allows.

Description:

The Turtle Hospital is the first state-certified veterinary hospital in the world exclusively for sea turtles. The Turtle Hospital is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to sea turtle rehabilitation, research, and education. The Turtle Hospital has successfully released over 1000 sea turtles back into the wild, and typically has 30 to 40 turtles under its care at any given time. Patients are treated for a variety of ailments including intestinal impactions, fishing line entanglements, boat hits, and tumor removals. The most commonly preformed surgical procedure is the removal of debilitating tumors caused by the fibropapilloma virus. The Turtle Hospital is funded by offering guided educational programs and also through its gift shop sales. The Turtle Hospital offers a guided educational program three times daily; seven days a week. Please call 305-743-2552 for information and reservations.
