SCDNR Marine Turtle Conservation Program

The SCDNR Marine Turtle Conservation Program is responsible for managing and protecting sea turtles in the state of South Carolina, USA. This program has several all encompassing components: management, monitoring, research, and education. More specifically this program provides technical expertise on anthropogenic activities that have the potential to impact sea turtles (i.e., nourishment, dredging), locates and protects sea turtle nests (~300 km of coastline), documents strandings, performs necropsies on fresh dead strandings, works with the SC Aquarium to provide rehablitation for live strandings, monitors nearshore waters for leatherbacks, and provides as much education, outreach and exchange of scientific information as time allows.

For 36 years, Wildlife Trust has worked to safeguard biodiversity in critical ecosystems around the world, building capacity and implementing sound conservation practices. Founded in 1971 by British naturalist and author Gerald Durrell, Wildlife Trust, a nonprofit organization with a budget of $6.5 million, empowers local conservation scientists worldwide to protect nature and safeguard ecosystem and human health. We are known for our innovative research on the intricate relationships between wildlife, ecosystems and human health.

Wildlife Trust has been working primarily on research activities related to threatened aquatic megafauna in the Southern and Northern Lagoons in Belize since 1997. These lagoons make up the largest coastal estuary system in the country and are influenced by three watersheds, with one exit from the lagoons to the sea. The Southern Lagoon is a protected area, declared for its importance for manatees, our primary target species. Although foremost a research based program, our work has also included the community, by direct involvement and support to the local groups working towards management of the Southern Lagoon. Specifically, we have produced a Management Plan and Community Development Plan with the Gales Point (Manatee) Wildlife Sanctuary stakeholders.

In addition, we have been working with the local management team to strengthen their capacity to carry out monitoring of the primary Hawksbill nesting site in the country, on the beach east of Southern Lagoon. While the community group has been working to protect the turtles for over a decade, in 2006 WT has become more closely involved with the overall conservation activities. This includes protecting nests from natural predators, and monitoring hatchling success.
