Description:
The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is one of three state aquariums located along the North Carolina coast. Like our sister facilities at Fort Fisher and Roanoke Island we keep a few loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and green (Chelonia mydas) sea turtles for display in exhibits and educational programs. We also function as a first response and short-term rehabilitation facility for hatchling and stranded turtles. In 2007 we initiated a long-term satellite tagging program involving the release of one or two turtles per year. Hatchlings that have been retained for exhibit purposes are released at two or three years of age. This project serves as a significant public education tool and will also increase the available data for migration movements of juvenile turtles.
