The Second Meeting on the Research and Conservation of the Marine Turtles of the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean will take place between September 31 and October 2 2004, in the facilities of the Marine World Foundation, Sea World Aquarium, San Clemente del Tuyú, and Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is expected that a group of approximately 50 people of different nationalities will take part, mainly from Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. Among them, there will be government representatives, researchers, fishermen and NGOs involved with marine environment conservation. The main objective of the meeting is sharing knowledge on the biology, conservation and rehabilitation in marine turtles, as well as the standardization of methods and protocols among the diverse projects that work in the Western South Atlantic. This will contribute towards the regional action plan created in the First Meeting in Montevideo, Uruguay (October 2003).
The first two days will consist of specialist meetings including invited lecturers, with wide experience in diverse topics related with the conservation of marine turtles. These invited speakers will help moderate discussions in a workshop format. The final day will be an open day, with the purpose that the scientific community and the wider public are made aware of the problems faced by marine turtles at national, regional and international levels.
