We are pleased to announce that the Indian Ocean Turtle Newsletter (IOTN) will be published from January 2005. The newsletter will be published by an informal alliance of sea turtle biologists and conservationists with an editorial board consisting of Jack Frazier, Nick Pilcher, Jeanne Mortimer, Matthew Godfrey, Mark Hamann, Sali Bache and Pankaj Sekhsaria. The board also includes representatives from the countries in the region, currently BC Choudhury (India), Thushan Kapurusinghe (Sri Lanka) and SMA Rashid (Bangladesh). Karthik Ram and Michael Coyne will coordinate the online version, which will be available through SEATURTLE.ORG from 2005.

The objectives of the IOTN are:

• To provide a mechanism through which awareness about the status of sea turtles and their habitats can be disseminated to a wide audience;
• To serve as a forum for discussing issues regarding the conservation and management of sea turtles and their habitats in south Asia and the Indian ocean;
• To disseminate information in a timely manner about sea turtles and their habitats to Government Departments and other involved government agencies, voluntary organizations, NGOs, fisheries cooperatives, community groups, universities and students as well as other institutions and individuals involved with the conservation and management of sea turtles and their habitats;
• To communicate with the international community (researchers, conservation organisations, and other interested parties outside the region of study) about sea turtle related activity in south Asia and the Indian Ocean.

We are open to contributions. We welcome articles (which will be reviewed) notes, letters and announcements. We also welcome casual notes, anecdotal accounts and snippets of information.
