Students from the seven participating local high schools on both Santa Cruz and San Cristóbal Islands attended the event, as well as teachers, community members, CDRS staff, business leaders, parents, and friends. Students delivered PowerPoint presentations explaining the research they conducted on the nesting beaches, and posters that were evaluated by a panel of judges. Poster content included scientific information, artistic impressions, and cartoon renderings of the students’ research experience.

Collaborators also gave a variety of speeches. Sandra Tapia, chaperone-participant from the Education Department at CDRS discussed the ways in which the program provides unique learning opportunities for students: “Through the research work, students develop the critical thinking skills to better understand scientific concepts.” Carmen Chasiluisa, research assistant for the sea turtle project at CDRS, expressed her appreciation for EPI’s dedication and commitment to outstanding education and science. Patricia Padilla, teacher at Colegio Nacional Galapagos, spoke about her students’ trip to Costa Rica to participate in EPI’s Leatherback program on the Caribbean coast.

Overall, the Symposium provided local high school students with an opportunity to share their field experiences with their peers and the community, in addition to providing them with recognition for their efforts and dedication.
