Heavy seas have destroyed the turtle hatchery and hatchery records, along with some 16,000 eggs, at Kosgoda, Sri Lanka. As it has been estimated that some 500 sea turtles and as many as 20,000 eggs are harvested in Sri Lanka each year, the loss of the hatchery is sure to be a serious setback to turtle conservation. During its operation, the Kosgoda hatchery released more than 150,000 turtles. (Based on information from "Weekend" 29 July, 1984, provided by K. Bjorndal).
