Fish and Wildlife's Woody is Honored for Mexico Work

The Fish and Wildlife Foundations' Chuck Yeager Award is supposed to be given to wildlife professionals who "make a difference on the ground." But Jack Woody, an associate regional director for the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Albuquerque [New Mexico] and a recent recipient of the award, had to go a bit farther. Woody makes a difference not only the ground but in the water and air as well. Woody is the national sea turtle coordinator for the Service. He's the agency's unofficial ambassador to Mexico, too, but the tasks go hand-in-hand. "Of the Kemp's ridley sea turtles, there are only about 600 reproducing females in the world and they all nest in Mexico," Woody said. In all, Woody oversees roughly 30 projects in Mexico, dealing with jaguars, flamingos and endangered orchids as well as the work being done with four of the world's species of sea turtles.
