A new sea turtle headstart facility was completed in April at the [NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service] Galveston Laboratory. The new building is of metal construction encompassing 6000 square feet and replaces the facility destroyed by Hurricane Jerry in October 1989. The building has contoured concrete floor and contains 20 fiberglass raceways with a maximum capacity of 1600 headstart Kemp's ridley sea turtles. On August 15, 1990 approximately 1,850 Kemp's ridley sea turtles headstarted at the Galveston Laboratory will be released along the southeastern Texas coast 50 nautical miles offshore.
