On 20 July 1990, a tagged juvenile hawksbill sea turtle weighing 40 kg and measuring 74 cm (straightline carapace length) was captured and killed in Dakar, Senegal. The turtle had been tagged in a feeding ground at the Biological Reserve of Atol das Rocas in Brazil (03°52°S, 33°49°W) on 25 January 1990 with a style 681 monel tag from National Band and Tag Company (Newport, Kentucky USA). The distance traveled by this young turtle was at least 2,300 miles [3680 km] during these six months. This is the second record of a sea turtle tagged in Brazil and subsequently recaptured in the eastern Atlantic. The first was a juvenile loggerhead released in the state of Espirito Santo and later reported in the Azores Archipelago (Bolten et al. 1990).
