Third Annual Japanese Sea Turtle Conference Held

The Third Annual Japanese Sea Turtle Conference was held 28-29 November 1992 at Okuda, Mihama-cho, Chita-gun, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Hosts for the conference were the Sea Turtle Association of Japan and Minamichita Beach Land. Co-sponsors were the Agency of the Environment and Kanetetu Delicia Foods Co. Ltd. This year's conference brought together 133 participants, a number that has increased each year of the conference. There were 33 oral presentations given on topics including population status, population modeling, tracking, sex ratios, morphology, behavior, and physiological studies. As for previous meetings, support was provided for a foreign scientist to attend and present a paper. This year, Dr. Blair Witherington (Florida Department of Natural Resources, USA) spoke on the topic, "Photopollution and Sea Turtle Conservation." Round table discussions on standardization of tagging projects and on the appropriateness of egg transplantation and hatcheries followed the oral presentations. There has been notable success in standardizing tagging protocol and information retrieval among research projects throughout Japan.
