In this blend of science and mythology, naturalist Jack Rudloe's lifelong interest in turtles takes him on a quest for explanations of a legend told by the Miskito Indians about a mysterious rock on the Caribbean shore of Costa Rica, which is said to have turned in toward the land when it was time for the sea turtles to come ashore to nest. Similar legends associated with sea turtle nesting beaches appear across Central America and Malaysia. The meaning of the legend of Turtle Mother slowly becomes clearer as Rudloe contemplates the mysteries of ancient legends and ruins, the impact of humanity's disrespect for nature, and the silent rituals of modern sea turtles.
