During the 1997 nesting season, 42 hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) nests were documented on the island of Hawaii. Volunteers are sought to monitor this nesting population at remote beaches in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from late May to early December, 1998. Requirements include a minimum commitment of 8 weeks, a positive attitude and a love of the outdoors as some nesting beaches are only accessible by hiking a 6.6-mile coastal trail. Additional duties include monitoring basking green turtles (Chelonia mydas), rescuing stranded hatchlings, excavating nests, and trapping and euthanizing predators (mongoose, feral cats, rats). Volunteers will camp 3-5 nights per week and shared dormitory-style housing is provided near Park Headquarters. Although a small stipend (US$7.00 per working day) is provided, additional personal funds will be needed to supplement this. The Turtle Hospital, a U.S.-based charitable organisation, is currently seeking a highly motivated, physically fit volunteer to assist in the daily needs of the sea turtles in our care (60-70 turtles at a time). The position is full time, unpaid, but includes housing. The intern must be prepared to commit a minimum of 3 months and available for subsequent employment. A bachelor's degree is preferred, and a love for sea turtles is a must. The internship program is an intensive, hands-on learning experience. Work will include daily feeding and care of turtles, learning the medical procedures necessary to rehabilitate turtles with the different conditions we treat, cleaning and upkeep of tanks and work areas, and participation in educational programs and tours of our facility.
