Investigation of Marine Turtle Exploitation in the UK Overseas Territories

A project to investigate the exploitation of marine turtles in UK Overseas Territories in the Caribbean including conservation status, patterns of exploitation and genetics is now underway. The study will include Anguilla, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Montserrat and the Turks and Caicos Islands. The 3 year initiative, funded by the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) will be co-ordinated by the Marine Turtle Research Group, University of Wales Swansea (MTRG) and the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) and will involve collaborative work with a wide range of organizations and individuals within the region and internationally.The consortium already includes Cayman Island Department of Environment, the Cayman Turtle Farm, the University of Western Ontario, the University of Wales, Cardiff. Project co-ordinators are now establishing a network of interested parties and individuals in each Territory and would be interested in hearing from you if you have information to offer or would be interested in involvement in subsequent initiatives.
