Beach Description

South Carolina DNR Sea Turtle Conservation Program

A 3,363 acre estate, Botany Bay Heritage Preserve/WMA is located at the north end of Edisto Island. The SC Department of Natural Resources acquired this property and opened it to the public in 2008. The two houses and farm buildings are not located near the 4.2 km beach. The beach is steep, littered with driftwood, and composed mostly of shell. Nesting loggerheads have a difficult time digging an egg chamber and often make several aborted egg chambers. It is equally difficult for those monitoring the beach to locate the nests by probing. This project was historically funded in part by the Charleston Natural Historical Society. Currently it is under the care and management of South Carolina DNR Marine Turtle Conservation Program. The project is surveyed in conjunction with Botany Bay Island, directly to the north of it.
