Satellite Tracking

Why did animal X stop transmitting?

Background

Tharushi the turtle was the second turtle to be tagged in Sri Lanka and was tagged after her 7th nest in the 2006 season. She was named after the daughters of the local Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC)Ranger Mr Goonatunga and the Turtle Conservation Project (TCP) Science Officer Lalith Ekanayake, both of whom assisted with the tag attachment.
30 tourists were present during the tagging but some left before we named her, so for you guys who were there, this is the turtle we thought had satellite tag no. 57666!

After she was tagged, Tharushi nested again on the 19.08.06 before starting her post-nesting migration. Tharushi's tag was supported by a grant from the UK Government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) as a contribution to the Indian Ocean and South East Asian (IOSEA) Year of the Sea Turtle 2006.

  • This map connects positions generated by the ARGOS system designated as location class (lc) '3', '2', '1', 'A'. Locations that have been "filtered" are displayed as small red dots.
  • This maps also shows locations of class '0', 'B', 'Z', 'X' as small black dots which are not connected by a route line.
  • Bathymetry layers are derived from the GEBCO One Minute Grid.
  • Sea surface temperature and chlorophyll are derived from NASA's Ocean Color data.
  • Ocean currents and sea surface heights are derived from AVISO's Ssalto/Duacs Gridded Absolute Dynamic Topography & absolute geostrophic velocities data.

SEATURTLE.ORG collaborates with Argos to help scientists and conservationists manage and analyse their valuable animal tracking data.
