Background

Camden is an adult male loggerhead that was tagged and released off of Virginia Beach November 1, 2005 in a cooperative effort with the Virginia Institute of Marine Science and Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center. Camden originally hatched from a nest in North Carolina in 1992 and was housed at the New Jersey State Aquarium as a display animal until 1996 when he was transferred to the Virginia Aquarium. Once Camden reached maturity, and after exploring the possibility of transferring Camden to another facility, the Aquarium made the decision to release him back to the wild. In preparation for release, Aquarium husbandry staff worked with and evaluated Camden for several months. He demonstrated a natural aptitude for hunting and consuming live food, and exhibited other normal sea turtle behaviors.

Kate Mansfield, a doctoral student from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, College of William and Mary, attached a Sirtrack Satellite tag to Camden in order to monitor his movements and behavior following his introduction to a natural habitat. Tags and data aquisition were funded in part by the Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk District. Good luck Camden!
