Background

This turtle was captured on a Uruguayan pelagic longline vessel operating in the SW Atlantic within Uruguayan waters. Belen was hooked deep in the esophagus. A PNOFA scientific observer removed the hook and the turtle was released in good condition. Belen was named after a fisherman's daughter and measured 63 cm CCL x 60 cm CCW.
