Background

This satellite tracking project has been sponsored by BHP Billiton Iron Ore as part of the Quantum Outer Harbour Development project. The project objectives are to to fill in the gaps in our knoweldge on flatback turtle movements following nesting in the Port Hedland region. This turtle was captured for the satellite tracking with the assistance of volunteers from the Care for Hedland Environmental Association. Mystery was found on Cemetery Beach in Port Hedland, Western Australia. A competition to name her was run by the Care for Hedland Environmental Association. She was named Mystery by Shalini (aged 7) who said "I would name it as Mystery the reason is Captain Peter Hedland arrived in the area in April 1863 on board his vessel Mystery"
