Description:
Just after the South Carolina Aquarium opened in May of 2000, staff began working with the SC Department of Natural Resources to rehabilitate sick and injured sea turtles. Since then, the Aquarium has formalized a Sea Turtle Rescue Program. In addition to devoted staff, the Aquarium has greatly expanded both its holding facilities and medical capabilities. The mission of the South Carolina Aquarium is centered on exceptional animal care, conservation and education. The Sea Turtle Rescue Program supports this mission not only through sea turtle rehabilitation, but also by providing many educational opportunities focused on sea turtle conservation. Award winning programs are used to educate the visiting public about the threats sea turtles face and actions that can be taken to help. Sea turtle conservation outreach programs are taken to schools, businesses, clubs and festivals throughout the state of South Carolina. The Aquarium also conducts and contributes to sea turtle research.
