Introduction
|
|
Barrow Island is located ~130km off the Pilbara coast of Western Australia. Barrow Island is one of a group of offshore islands that also include the Montebello and Lowendal Island chains. Green, flatback and hawksbill turtles nest on all three island groups with high density nesting of flatback and green turtles occuring on Barrow Island. Barrow Island is also the site of an oil field that has been operating since 1965. Oil and gas activity extends throughout the Barrow, Montebello, Lowendal Island groups both onshore and offshore. The sea turtles that nest within the region are recognised as having high conservation value and consequently have been the subject of intensive study since 1998. The satellite tracking project is a component of the current research program which aims to map the habitats used by turtles that nest at Barrow Island. This information will be used to manage ongoing industrial development in the region.
