Introduction
San Diego Bay is among the northern-most foraging areas for green turtles in the Eastern Pacific. Information on origin (and thus possible migration patterns), growth rates, and behaviour will contribute to general knowledge about east Pacific green turtles (also known as black turtles). This basic information is necessary to make informed management decisions concerning these turtles and their habitat. Information from our study of these turtles has already been, and will continue to be, used by the NOAA Southwest Regional Office and the Unified Port of San Diego in their efforts to manage human activities and coastal development within the bay.
This satellite telemetry effort is complemented by an ongoing ultrasonic tracking project that partners NOAA with researchers from San Diego State University. Both telemetry components will contribute to information about green turtle habitat use in San Diego bay, both now - in a time when the South Bay Power Plant continues to operate in the southern Bay, and after the imminent closure of the power plant.
