Two more KiwiSat 101 PTTs were deployed in Year 3 of this Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) flatback tagging program. Commencing annually mid October with a preparation project recording early season nesting activity, the main 40-night tagging component occurs during November and December. This is then followed by a hatchling monitoring program to mid February, completing the entire nesting and hatching seasons.
Following on from two initial PTT deployments during November of 2009, two more were attached by harness to nesting flatbacks. The turtles have been monitored from November/December 2010 onwards.
This CVA sea turtle monitoring program operates from a base at Eco Beach Wilderness Retreat, 130kms south of Broome, Western Australia.
Tagging of nesting and migrating flatbacks in the Roebuck Bay region of the Kimberleys had not occurred prior to 2008 and the Eco Beach Monitoring Program complements CVA's Cable Beach Community-based Monitoring Program which records morning track and nest counts, also for flatbacks.
Sea turtle conservation and research methods at this Eco Beach study site include tagging, DNA sampling, beach and nest temperature data logging and monitoring levels of nest loss through predation and erosion.
CVA delivers and manages this annual monitoring program as part of our Wild Futures initiative adding special focus to our conservation work in key locations around Australia and New Zealand. Places critical for the survival of some of our most threatened wildlife include this focus on sea turtles in the Broome region.
