TUKOT - Ascension Island
Project Partners: In Ascension Island, TUKOT was launched by the consortium of project partners involved in the ongoing marine turtle project. These include:

Status: Ascension Island plays host to one of the Atlantic’s largest breeding colonies of the green turtle as well as a small population of foraging hawksbill turtles. Data gathered since 1998 and compared to those collated by other workers in the 1970’s suggest that the green turtle population at Ascension may be recovering from historical exploitation.
Monitoring and Research: The green turtle nesting population at Ascension is one of the most intensively researched populations in the world. Many research papers have been published. In the last few years, effort has been expended into inwater monitoring, tagging and sampling of hawksbill turtles around the island.

Ascension Island, the Environment Charter and Multilateral Environment Agreements (MEAs): On the 26th of September 2001, Ascension Island signed the Environment Charter, with UK government signing a reciprocal agreement at the same time. A great deal of background regarding the Environment Charter can be sourced in the website of the UKOTCF and the full text can be downloaded as an image.
Of the MEAs most relevant to marine turtle conservation in the region, Ascension Island is signatory to the following:
Convention on Biodiversity (CBD)
Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES)
Convention on Migratory Species (CMS)
Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar)
World Heritage Convention (WHC)
